I came across this fun wedding sign in idea. It's a fun take on the original photographer ran photobooth. IT HAS A TRAMPOLINE! Can you imagine all the fun possibilities? It would be a blast for those people at your wedding feeling adventurous.

Fall Patio Parties

My oldest sister is about to have her 3rd little one. (Can't wait!! Her kids are ADORABLE! So I can only imagine how precious this little girl is going to be!)

With my other sisters in hand (there are 5 of us sisters in all) we threw her a girls night out baby shower. There were lights, lanterns, even a small sofa with plum pillows to give this fall girls night out a little sophistication. It was so much fun sitting out on the patio as it got dark. Something about globe nights at night that feel magical.

And of course, good food!!

We had cookies with chocolate milk, grilled cheese, tomato basil soup in mason jars, chicken ceaser salad, a smores bar and sheep dip.

Chicken ceasar salad out of a pumpkin.

And of course my families favorite Sheep Dip.

My family loves this stuff! It's a great holiday appetizer.

Want to try it?

I will take that as a yes! :)

SHEEP DIP RECIPE

You will need:

8oz Cream Cheese
8oz Sour Cream
1 Cup grated cheddar cheese
1 large jar of armour dried beef chopped
1 bunch green onions chopped
1 T. Worcestershire Sauce
Garlic salt to taste
1 loaf Shepherd bread (round) or french bread

Use an electric mixer to beat the cream cheese & sour cream together. When smooth add the cheddar cheese and other ingredients.

Cut off the top of the bread and save the top. Hollow out the inside of the bread making a bread bowl and break the bread that came out into bite sized pieces.

Set the oven to 350 degrees. Place the bread bowl on a baking sheet and fill it with the cream cheese mixture. Place the bit sizes pieces of bread around the bowl and pop it in the oven for one hour. Every 15 minutes you will need to turn the bread pieces to make sure they are getting toasty and not burning. The last 15 minutes put the top of the bread back on the bowl and let it finish cooking.

And Ta-Da! A great dipping treat. Salty goodies is what it is. Try it this holiday.

Maybe it will become your families favorite too.

Fallowgiving: DIY Fall Pumpkin Planter

I love the look of fresh flowers in my house. But I hate having to throw them away once they start to wilt. (Wilt? Ok, more like I throw them away when they start to decompose on my kitchen counter so when I pour the water down the sink it smells like something has died.)

But this little fallowsgiving decor idea gives me fresh lasting flowers on the counter all season and looks great for parties at our house.

Items you will need:

Plastic .99 cent pumpkin
Potted flower of your choice.
Patterned fall fabric
Drill
Mod Podge
Scissors
Glass plate
*Optional: Baby monitor: I did this whole project in less then 1 nap. SCORE.

Step 1

Cut off the plastic handles

Step 2

Use your drill to drill holes in the bottom of the pumpkin for water drainage.

I did 7 holes on the bottom of my pumpkin for water drainage.

Step 3

Cut your fabric into long strips the length of the side of the pumpkin. I used a table cloth that had been ruined at a wedding.

(*Side note to anyone planning their wedding.... SAY NO TO RED PUNCH. Someone will ruin at least 1 tablecloth. Don't make me say I told you so. :)

Don't worry about the strips being perfect. You can trim them later.

Step 4

Mod Podge the fabric to the pumpkin strip by strip. This is a project that kids could totally help with. You can be messy and don't have to worry about being perfect.

I did a two layers of fabric since my fabric was a wee-bit see through.When you're done trim the top fabric and the bottom to make sure the holes on the bottom aren't covered up and the top just barley folds over.

Step 5

Give your pumpkins a few minutes to dry. Once the glue has dried just take your potted plant out of the store container and put it in your new fall pumpkin planter container.

Then just take the whole planter and place it on the glass plate. (Who wants soil water all over their counter? Not I!)

Wahla! Your new fall pumpkin planter. Cute, easy...

and all before the baby ever woke up.

Mocks Ups=Perfection

Setting up a picture perfect event takes LOTS of hours of prep work. Washing, shinning, windexing and mock ups.

Mock ups are SO important. They are like a test run before the real thing. You could have the best intentions in the word when it comes to your weddings decor, but if you do not measure out the space or try it out, how will you know what will really works? Sometimes I just don't like to leave it up to chance. So I mock it up.

These pictures are a mock up I just worked on for a dessert/cupcake display at a wedding.

Imagine red candy, cupcakes, black and white polka dot background, vertical round pendants...

Oozing Adorableness!

I knew my table would be a 6ft banquet table. So I measured 3ft x 6ft and set it all up to see what would work on the table.

Can't wait to see this finished product outside this October!

Fallowgiving: Burlap in the Fall

This is the first project in the Fallowgiving projects to get my home SEASON ready so my holiday decor can last longer. Why not decorate to last Mid Sept-Nov? With busy lives, it seems to be all I have time for.

(Do you get as excited as I do for Halloween and Thanksgiving? I always want to decorate too early. Now I can!)

I love decorating with burlap. It looks so natural and raw and reminds me of harvesting bags which leads me to FALL, ya'll.

I picked the word HARVEST because I felt it is a word that connects
more to the season then the holiday.

Look below.

STEP 1
First you need to make sure you gather all your supplies.
   Supply list:
               Burlap
              Scissors
              Permanent Marker
              Ribbon
            Hot glue gun
            Pendant Template (See below)

Save and print the template below for a cutting guide to getting identical pendant flags.

It creates a 3x3 flag.

STEP 2
Cut out the burlap flags. One for each letter you want to spell.

STEP 3
Find a font you want to use on the computer. I choose Capitals. I liked a traditional thick font.

STEP 4

After you find your font you want to use, tape your flag to the screen and trace the letter with your permanent marker.

(I loved using my computer screen so I didn't waste any extra paper. Just be careful not to write on your screen)

STEP 5

Once you're done outlining your letters, it's time to fill it in. Make sure you do this on scrap paper you don't mind the marker bleeding through on.

STEP 6

This step is additional if you want a more rough look. (Which I did!) Now that your little flags are almost done you just take the flag in your hands and pull on the edges. Like you are gently ripping the edges. It loosens the weave of the burlap and gives the flag a rougher look.

STEP 8

Once your flags are ready. Just hot glue the flags to the ribbon. With burlap, I just used 1 dot on each upper corner, and one dot of glue in the middle/top. Because burlap is a loose weave, I didn't want a lot of glue to show through.

And TA-DA! You are all ready for your 3 seasons pendant banner that can be used from mid Sept-Nov. Pair it with a pumpkin and now we are talking.

I also did the exact same thing to create a burlap pillow slip cover with the leftover fabric.

(Check back in a few weeks on how to make a SUPER easy pillow slipcovers. You'll feel like a total seamstress once you try them. I use them all the time for weddings to give them personal touches)

Cute, generic and oh so simple.

Looking at it makes me excited for all the fun in the season ahead.

Season House Decorating

I think I'm winning though. heh :)

and I am always decorating for other peoples events,
sometimes there just isn't time for energy left for myself to
decorate for every holiday.

My solution? Enter "FALLOWGIVING"

It's fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving all wrapped into
one greatly decorated mess that lasts for

3ish months instead of just one!
Brilliant? Pretty much. :)

I'll be starting a new series on "how to's" that will show you a few of the fun things I've been up to, to create my Fallowgiving this year. That way my house is ready for all this seasons parties, but I don't have to keep a lot up with it as the holiday changes. (until Christmas, of course!)

Shab to Fab Wingback Reupholstered

I have a complex. I see something online and think, I can do that! I want to try!

RIGHT... THIS... MINUTE...

And I can't do anything until I do it. I get really determined sometimes. :)

So, when I saw all the awesome wing back chairs being redone, I wanted to try my hand at it.

I found this beauty at my local DI for $30.

The below chart from Little Green Notebook let me know how much I'd need for my little chair.

(Totally worth Pinning to look back at later!)

I got 5 1/2 yards of gray velvet and cording for the piping.

I didn't take any 'during the process' pictures. I will tell you though: my fingers were sore, the living room was covered in staples, and I broke 1 needle on my sewing machine going through so many layers of velvet.

(I'd drape myself in velvet if it were socially acceptable.)

I'd think twice about doing another, but I loved the end product!

(I love before and after pictures!)

This is going to look great at a gray, eggplant and white/ivory wedding coming up!

Mr. Bentley wanted to get in on the picture taking.

Real Weddings: Lighting Up the Night

This was such an adorable bride and groom and I just loved working with her and her mom. It was a drizzly reception night in St. George, Utah, but that didn't get any spirits down at the reception. They had lots of dancing and great food all night!

Something fun about their wedding is that there was lots of mood lighting, from the centerpiece that lit up, the paper lanterns with their own individual lights to the sparkler send off.

I'm going to get a little personal for a minute because I am absolutely infatuated with this little guy. After 9 months of being preggo, doing weddings, being at expo shows, etc (Did you see that crazy girl with the giant belly waddling around? Yup, Hi, that was me :) Well, the little man has finally come!

This is my sweet little Baby J.

It's amazing how having something so sweet in your arms makes things coming into focus in your life and see the big picture. He has given me a renewed excitement for weddings. After all, first comes love, then comes marriage.... and well you know the rest. ;)

It's amazing to create weddings that start a new chapter in a couples lives. There will be so many beautiful days ahead of them and I'm grateful I get to be apart of one of them.

New Take on an Old Treat

I usually can't eat just one cupcake. Especially if they are a stuffed cupcake! (Be honest, can you if no one was looking?)

They are my favorite. But cupcakes at weddings have been, well how do it say it nice, OVERDONE lately. They are a cute treat and they will always be adorable, but why not think out-side-the-box if you are thinking of serving these scrumptious little treats at your wedding.

(Remember the ice cream push ups when you were a kiddo? If I remember right, the Swann Man would bring them. :)

Or how about take it a step further and make it a station at your wedding?

You can purchase empty clear plastic push up canisters and have a server at a station filling them with an array of different sweet layers that your guests get to pick out. Have custards, fresh fruit, cake, candy bar pieces etc. It would make such a fun and interactive wedding dessert! I would wait in line all night to get one.

Classic Red, Black & White Wedding

Your classic red, black and white wedding will always be classic combination in weddings colors. This is an adorable example of a wedding we did at Astoria this past month in those colors. The bride and groom were great to work with and it was fun to get to do a wedding over at the new venue Astoria.

The aisle was lined with red rose petals and glass cylinders with rose petals and floating candles.

I especially loved the branch ceremony pieces by Bloomers. Such a simple design with such a big impact.

The food was done by Katering Koncepts. The whole staff was great about helping with everything they could and making sure everything stayed stocked and fresh. I just love working with them.

One of the most adorable and unique things at Astoria are the pastry cases. These pastry cases had cupcakes, brownie bites and ice cream for ice cream sundaes. Guests got to come to the cases, pick what they want, and get served like a cupcake/ice cream parlor.

I absolutely love signage at weddings. I believe it is a necessary at every wedding event. Whether it is your names, menu's or the itinerary for the night. It creates such a uniformed look without a large expense. This wedding was so easy to incorporate signage everywhere that matched their invites.

The cake was done by Bridal Cakes by Yvonne. It was two different flavors and alternated between square and round layers.

Garden Wedding Style Board.

I can't wait for this fun wedding coming up in May!

The bride and groom have been so much fun to work with. Plus the bride has such a fun theme and style. This pink, sage and ivory vintage garden wedding is taking place up at Entrada outside on their lawn. It will have ribbon accents, paper lanterns, cherry blossoms, books, trunks, a wood cake table display, candle light and lots of little details. For some reason it reminds me of a wedding you would see in Pride and Prejudice...

Little Spool, Big Difference!

Ribbon can make such a huge statement at a wedding without a huge cost. All that is needed is a little imagination and some good quality ribbon to have your wedding take that next step into something truly unique. Maybe some of these ideas will help spark some creativity in you. :)

2011 Wedding Expo Fun

The Ultimate Wedding Showcase at Tai Pan Trading in Southern Utah was a blast this year. It was great to get to meet some amazing brides-to-be and talk to all to different wedding vendors, who I respect so much!

I wanted to go a bit more modern this year with custom pieces I have in Middle Aisle's inventory. (ex. silver bar, white ceremony pillars, white sweets table and custom floating wall)

I especially love sweets, so a sweet bar seemed just right.

The beautiful modern arrangements were done by Bloomers. Always gorgeous!

And thanks to the fabulous staff at Tai Pan we were able to hang 3 drum shades with bud vases and flowers hanging from each.

Zion Weddings: Trouble Makers

Having a Zion wedding is so gorgeous. You have a naturally beautiful background. In the summer however, there are a few things you need to account for if you're getting married in the park. Like the fact you can't drive into the park to the ceremony location in some areas. You get to ride the bus. :)

But Jealin and I are rebels and took our permit to the ceremony location. Just to make sure it was perfect before it began.

But we got caught! And got pulled over.

Luckily, with a little eye batting and some smooth talking, he gave us an additional permit to drive into the park making it so after the ceremony the couple and their kids got to drive straight down to their private dinner instead of waiting for the bus to come back.

Thank goodness we got pulled over. It made the event even more custom and special, because weddings don't get to drive into the park at busy season. :)

Las Vegas 1940 Parlor Wedding

Can I just start by saying, Chris and Elyssa are one one of the most hilarious and unique couples! There love for life and each other is contagious! I love being around them (and still look up Chris's website to see the new video comedies he is making with her.)

A large part of inspiration for their wedding came from a favorite movie they have called "The Brothers Bloom." Once watching it, I absolutely loved it too. The movie has an elegant artistic feel and is, in an odd way, fun. While watching it the theme of a mansion style parlor seemed to fit the style, colors and look of something elegant but fun, perfect. Plus incorporating books just seemed right with the bride graduating in literature and both of them working together on the school newspaper in college. You can see their inspiration board from a later post here.

Jason with Jason McCrew Photography came all the way from Salt Lake to do their stunning wedding pictures for the day. He started in St. George and came down to the second half of the wedding that took place in Las Vegas. The pictures the beautiful, and I hope to be seeing him down in Southern Utah a lot.The pictures turned out stunning.

Bloomers from St. George did all the floral from the bouquet to the floral centerpieces at the reception in Las Vegas. The size and color of the floral they used where so vibrant and gorgeous tying in the reds, oranges and slight hints of yellow in the billy balls and mums.

The reception took place at the Plaza at Whitney Ranch in Henderson. The great part about this venue is that is it all a neutral color and a blank slate. You rent all the tables, chairs and decor to your taste so it can be personalized. I love it when you can really get into a venue and make it your own.

I loved the centerpieces. Each one was in a brown urn with books to give it an elevations. The brides dad has a book collection that was used. It gave it such a personal touch.

Also, on each guest table was a deck of cards and a book of magic tricks and card games. In the movie "The Brothers Bloom" they play on a lot of magic tricks. This gave the guests something interactive at the tables.

There is a large grand stair case in the front entry, which made a great place for greeting guests and dancing later on in the night. To make sure the party flowed between both rooms, small bistro tables, that fit 4 people, where placed in the front entry in orange with vibrant floral in red vases. This made additional seating for a smaller group and also provided a place for people to watch when the dancing began.

To give the space a more parlor/mansion library feel, bookcases where brought in with special mementos from the bride, groom and their family. This included works of art, pictures of the bride and groom, collectible books, a family vintage typewriter, etc all on display. It was so much fun to look at the bookshelves and see little pieces of the bride and groom. There was also a large brown leather sofa, end tables and ottoman to give a lounge look you would expect for a cozy place to read in your parlor.

In the top right pictures is the well used "Self-Serve" photo booth. There was a red damask screen put up with props like mustaches, eye glasses, a boa etc that a guest could take, snap a photo on a digital camera, and take a paper to let them know where to find the pictures on the couples blog after the wedding. This is also a way families will remember to bookmark their blog and see what they've been up to.

Instead of a wedding cake the bride and groom had bundt cakes from Everything Bundt Cakes. I loved their unique idea of using something different. Luckily for the guests, there was a large table in the room filled with all different flavors of bundt cakes for them to take a piece also and enjoy.

And what is an event without an amazing spread of food! Since the bride and groom are vegetarians, they had a little of both to please everyone.

Lots of lots of delicious Italian food by their good friend Ray.

Even an Italian Soda Bar with enough flavors for everyone's taste.

Signage is one of my favorite things at wedding. I love taking an invitation and branding it all over the wedding to make it all cohesive. I even used photo shop to create little movie posters about the couple, since one day Chris will be making motion pictures himself. :)

Chris and Elyssa, you are amazing. Your wedding was such a blast and I treasure being apart of it. Thanks so much for going along with all the crazy ideas. It can be hard to plan a wedding with both of us being hours away from everything, but you made it so simple and fun. I wish you both the best and know your life will always be full of laughter and great times.

East Coast Bliss

It has been busy here at Middle Aisle, but I am having so much fun. As for the lack of posting, Me and my husband took a few days off to go see the big city of New York and jumped on a cruise from there to see the east coast.

The day after I got home I went straight into another wedding and have finally had a chance to relax a bit from weddings, travel and the holidays. I absolutely love this time of year!

Ethan and Stephanie got married up at the Opera House. They both have great style and Stephanie can up with such fun details to make her weddings so cute and fun!

Their colors were grass green, yellow and gray.

The wedding dinner was followed straight into the reception.

Stephanie found these fun birds on Etsy.

I just loved the banners Steph made to go over the bar and display table.

The bouquet, corsages and boutonnieres were done by Bloomers.

If you look close you can almost see that the sign in table was filled with lemons and limes.

This cake was a total hit! It turned out so cute. Heidi was Icing made it.

These two little love birds topped the cake matching the bride and groom. Also from Etsy.

The groom does graphic design and designed all the thank you cards to the guests and even designed their invitation. They turned out great!

This inspiration board is in my files for such a fun bride and groom. There colors are lemon, grass green and gray and everything has a Etsy flare to it. The groom does graphic design and designed the invitations himself! I loved being apart of their wedding and can't wait to share the pictures.

And what would a planner be without a 2D layout plan of attack.

We had a quick 15 minute turn, so we all had to be on the same page. (Taylor & Nick, you rocked it.) :)

On the Books: Las Vegas 1940 Themed Parlor Wedding

This weekend was the 1940's parlor themed wedding in Las Vegas. It was a total blast.

Below is the inspiration board for the event. The concept came from the bride and grooms favorite movie The Brothers Bloom (Great movie, make sure you see it if you haven't). And with the bride being a literature major and the couple meeting working for the school newspaper, books only seemed natural to incorporate into the wedding. This couple is as witty as can be and have so much style and love for life, you can't help but want to be around them! They were perfectly made for each other.

I can't wait to see the pictures and loved being apart of their big day.

Elan Woman Photoshoot: Part #2

The wedding expo was such a blast to be apart of this past January. If you went to it, you might remember this tablescape from our expo booth. I was lucky enough to be able to take that set up for an amazing photoshoot for Elan Woman Magazine with Nick Adams Photography and Bloomers Floral and Decor the next day.

It's amazing how talented photographers, lighting and a garden setting can take a tablescape to the next level.

(Some of my favorite decor pieces I've put in my office are those artichokes. :)

The floral arrangement was amazing. The quality of flowers Bloomers uses in ther arrangement is always the best.

Tablescape Photoshoot

Nothing is greater than working with AMAZING talent.

In February I was blessed to work with some spectacualr wedding vendors in Southern Utah for a tablescape photoshoot for Elan Woman Magazine.

Nick and Signe Adams with Nick Adams Photography and Kathy Jessop with Bloomers Flowers and Decor were spectacular to work with. I get goose bumps thinking of how creative and fun they were!!

The location for this shoot was at the Dixie College Alumni House.

The color pallette for the event was charcoal, black, white and yellow.

This purse was the best touch of all by Bloomers!

I don't think I could ever thank the vendors who helped put this together enough. I just think the world of them.

From Inspiration to Reality

If we don't know what we want the end product to be, does it matter what it is going to be like?

At Middle Aisle every single event has to have a "road map." It helps everyone to know where everything will be placed and what the overall event will look like. (Obsessive, maybe. But it creates a spectacular end product! ) :D I start with an inspiration board for what the overall look of the event should look like.

This inspiration board is from an event this week I was fortunate enough to be able to be apart of called "Launch Your World" put on by Elan Woman Magazine. It is a year long series, and it was so much fun to be apart of their kick off event.

A few things were a must for this celebration of woman. First off, pink and things that sparkle. It also needed to fit the seasons of spring and new beginnings. So the branches and apples were the perfect touch.

Next the layout of the event is created.

This shows where each table will be placed and how the flow of traffic will be.

I got to work with two amazing woman, Julie Iverson with the BellTower and Olga with Olga Goddard's Floral Design to combined all our resources to pull off this event.

Combating your Bridezilla

I hate this term. Bridezilla. But unfortunatley, they are out there.

(I remember being a little one myself when I was married years ago. Sorry mom!) If you're worried this might be you, take a look at how you can combat becoming one.

As seen in the Neighborhood section of The Spectrum.

If you have ever experienced a bride who asks her bridesmaids to go on a diet for her wedding, asks for cash gifts from her guests or demands multiple parties for herself, you have probably been in contact with a bridezilla.

Neorelationship

The term bridezilla is often used to describe part bride and part monster who emerges when the stress and pressure from planning her wedding becomes too much. These brides are given this name for being unpleasant, selfish and perfectionists.

Fortunately for brides, there are ways to combat this monster so that they do not become a bridezilla.

One important way to not become a bridezilla is to always say thank you to family, friends and vendors. By showing gratitude, brides will begin to recognize how much time others have put into their wedding. Remembering to always be appreciative will help brides keep friendships intact.

Bridal Party Tees

If a bride knows that she is a perfectionist, it is important to hire professional perfectionists from the beginning of the planning process. Professionals help brides know if what they want is reasonable and if they can accomplish the brides vision or not.

By the bride recognizing if she is a perfectionist will help with any disappointments and bad feelings toward loved ones who have volunteered to help with the wedding.

The conversation never goes well and bad feelings can arise when a friend who volunteered to do the wedding cake shows up with a disaster falling off the cake stand instead of the cake the bride had imagined.

Another way to not become a bridezilla is for a bride to set clear expectations for friends and family members she would like to be included in the wedding and how involved she would like them to be. This should never be a demand, but a sincere request to be a part of the wedding because she wants them to share in her big day.

When all else fails remember simply to treat others like you would like to be treated if the roles were someday reversed, because one day they just might.

Shout Out: So You Think You Can Decorate

I wanted to give a shout out to the talent going on over at So You Think You Can Decorate. S.Y.T.Y.C.D. is a reality blog decorating contest where (WE!) the viewers get to pick our favorite entries and one person is sadly kicked off every week. These talented designers are from all over the nation.

My favorite part is that the host putting together this whole thing is a talented gal from St. George!! She also has her own design blog AlchemyJunk with some friends in the area. Southern Utah has such amazing talent all over! Make sure you check it out and show your support.

It is so important in the wedding industry to pay attention to current interior decorating trends in magazine and blogs for wedding decor inspiration. They are such a great resource to something fun and unqiue you can do for your special day and all these designers in this contest are amazing! What I especially love is that they teach you how to recreate most of the pieces yourself. I have such a long list of projects now... I'm excited to do them all, some for weddings, and some for my own home.

Aisle Walking 101: This One is For the Boys

This is why it is important that the groom looks smokin' too! It is a well known fact that the majority of guys just look better all cleaned up and what better time to do then for their special day for that special someone.

Grooms can be found in all colors and styles these days. Wearing a suit is a great way to dress up without looking as formal as a tux. Grays and khaki are two of my ultimate favorites right now as an alternative to black. They still look great, but add a lot of personal style.

Aisle Walking 101: Picking a planner

Not all wedding planners are a good fit for you.

You heard me right. I am a planner myself letting you know that we are all not created equal. We all are so different. Hopefully this article will help you recognize the best planner for you.

Once you get engaged it can be hard to know where to begin planning your wedding. This is where your wedding planner and designer steps in to take your vision and create it so you can relax and know a professional is handling everything.

Choosing which planner to use is a big decision since they will be the one executing your wedding, keeping you on budget, referring other professional vendors and negotiating contracts for you.

Personality is one of the most important things to consider when picking out a wedding planner and designer. You will be spending a lot of time with this individual going over contracts, information and ideas. If you do not feel completely comfortable talking with the planner, this is not a good match for you.

Talking to someone about budgets or family interactions will make the experience uncomfortable and stressful if you feel like you have to withhold information because you do not have a good rapport with your planner.

Make sure the planner you are talking with is accessible. The planner needs to be prompt at answering your phone calls or messages. Making sure they are easy to get a hold of will put your mind at ease if an emergency occurred and you needed to talk with them immediately.

A wedding planner's style will also let you know if this is a good fit. Their style of work can be seen in their portfolio pictures, their office and how they present themselves. Their style will help you know if your wedding will visually turn out the way you want.

Wedding planners will charge either a flat fee for their services or a percentage of the total budget ranging from 15 to 20 percent. Usually a percentage is charged if the overall wedding budget is larger than average.

Read through the planner's contracts to know exactly what you will be getting and what is included in your planner's services for the price you have been quoted. Always sign a written contract to ensure you have a binding agreement of what services you will be getting.

Referrals are another great way to know if you will be working with someone reliable and dependable. You can always ask a planner for references, but know in advance they will usually all be positive because they were given to you by them.

Another way to find references is word of mouth. Start asking around about that planner. Ask friends, family or even other wedding professionals you trust to know if they will be a good fit for you.

Finally, make sure the company you are using is registered, licensed and an insured business. This separates a professional with a person who plans and designs as a hobby.

Wedding: Do it Yourself Centerpieces

This is a fun project for brides who are hands on and oh-so thrifty!

These branch centerpieces for your wedding are super easy to make.

Start with a branch.

I choose a set of branches that had been in a recent fire. They had a whimsical look, so I drove a full hour to get them. Ha. What I won't do for the right look! Any branch will do though.

Next spray paint your branches whatever color you want them to be.

I chose a dark brown for this particular wedding.

Next you will need Plaster of Paris and disposable containers.

I got the Plaster of Paris at my local craft store for around $6 and the disposable containers five for $1 at the dollar store.

Mix the plaster as described on the back of the tub. All it takes is water. I mixed everything right in the container with a plastic spoon so clean up would be easy.

Once the plaster has begun to set, take your branch and push it to the very bottom of the container. Make sure you do this quickly so the plaster will set up around the branch. You may need to hold it there for a few minutes so the branch sets up straight.

And WALA, centerpieces all ready to be decorated all for $1.50 each.

(I made 5 in all)

The last thing you need to do it find is a decorative container for them to be in to hide the plaster base. This particular centerpiece was covered in Spanish moss and had orchids and crystals hung from the branches.

Be creative there are lots of options that can be done to decorate these fun centerpieces.

The Costly Truth

I am constantly record wedding shows on my tivo and watch them into the wee hours of the night. My poor husband sometimes has to drag me away to get me to go to bed.

One of my favorites is David Tutera's My Fair Wedding. I have only one problem with it... They don't tell you how much it would actually cost to do it yourself! Some of the things he has done for these couples belong on Platinum Weddings. (yet another tivo'd show)

So I thought it would be interesting to take a beautiful wedding tablescape and break it all down into costs. I think sometimes we forget how fast things add up, even if the set up seems a little simpler like the picture below.

This isn't a wedding I have done, so it could cost alot different. Heck, for all I know this person borrowed all their china and grew the flowers on their porch. :) But if you are to do this tablescape in Southern Utah here is the price you would be looking at.

Isn't the drop ceiling breathe taking? This is an event done by La Partie Events in Cali. They do AMAZING work, make sure you check them out.

Being the Best Bridesmaid you Can Be

What to Expect if you are a Bridesmaid

It is considered an honor to be asked to be a bridesmaid for a friend or sister's big day. Remember though, this honor does not come without responsibilities.

Bridesmaids are like a bride's ladies in waiting. They need to be ready to dry a tear, hold a hand and fill in when necessary. They are the support and shoulder to lean on for the bride.

Bridesmaids may be asked to fill in at appointments with the bride when the groom is not available, help with design ideas or just help take some stress off the bride. Do not assume you will need to assist in all things, but be ready in case you are needed.

A large responsibility of the bridesmaids is to throw the bridal shower and bachelorette party. The matron of honor is usually the head of this event, but relies on all the bridesmaids to help create a good time and ease the financial burden of paying for the parties.

The dreaded bridesmaid dress is also the responsibility of the bridesmaids to purchase for being in the wedding party. Occasionally, the bride will pay for this cost, but traditionally it is the bridesmaids that pay for the dress and shoes the bride has picked.

It is common for all bridesmaids to be in the wedding ceremony, and to precede the bride before her walk down the middle aisle. A bridesmaid will need to be at the rehearsal and dinner party to know what she will be doing for the ceremony.

Common types of ceremonies seen in Southern Utah are Latter-day Saint temple ceremonies. In this case, it is the bridesmaids responsibility to coordinate with the florist to ensure the bride has her bouquet for pictures as soon as she exits the temple, and to bring the bouquet back to the florist for touchups immediately after so it looks good for the reception.

At the reception, a bridesmaid may be asked to participate in the receiving line to greet guests, direct traffic flow, have guests sign the guest book, or even receive the different vendors before the bride arrives. A bridesmaid is expected to be there the whole time to participate and encourage the party if needed.

As the bridesmaid, the most important thing to remember is to be a good friend. After all, that is why you were asked to be a bridesmaid in the first place.

Mikki Platt with Captured by Mikki (and I'm sure her adorable husband Braydon) took these amazing photos at a wedding up in Sandy at La Caille. I love it that a husband and wife work together and share the same passion for something! I know this wedding isn't in Southern Utah, but it was too cute to pass up. Good thing Captured comes down to Southern Utah to do weddings, because they have amazing talent. I'm so excited they are letting us share this event with Middle Aisle.

Don't Forget to Tip

We give a tip to our hair stylists, valets, delivery drivers and waiters. We give tips for services that are above the average to the exceptional.

This holds true to the wedding industry also. When someone has gone above and beyond to ensure your wedding day is perfect, it is not uncommon to tip those professionals.
Since these are not typical services that we tip for everyday, follow these simple guidelines to know what is appropriate.

When it comes to catering, a gratuity is usually already built in. Make sure you understand your contract and know if a gratuity was already added.

If not, remember to add a gratuity anywhere from 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill. You would tip your waiter, so remember to tip your wait staff and adjust for this expense on your overall budget.

If you have a bartender at your event, decide beforehand if you will be allowing a tip jar to be placed at the bar or if you will be tipping the bartender yourself. If you would like to tip the bartender yourself plan on a 20 to 25 percent gratuity on the total bill.

If you will be having a tip jar and the bartender exceeds your expectations, a 10 percent tip is appropriate.

Officiants, who performs the ceremony, can receive a gratuity also; however, it may not be appropriate in some cases. Anywhere from $50 to $100 can be given to a clergy member for a donation or gratuity.

Civil officiants, like a clerk or judge, may not be allowed to accept anything other than the flat fee. Make sure you check with your officiant before hand.

As for photographers, florists, bakers, wedding planners and disc jockeys, a tip is not required. If you feel as though any of them were exceptional a 15 percent to 20 percent gratuity is a great gesture to show them how pleased you were.

If tipping is not an option, a gesture all wedding professionals love to receive are thank you notes. This lets the vendor know that they exceeded your expectations and did their job well done.

My mother forwarded me this website, which turned out to be FABULOUS! They create inspiration boards. How cool is this? It is an inspiration board for a wedding on Nov. 20th at the BellTower. The Dessy Group specializes in wedding attire and has a great program that can help you create your own inspiration board for your wedding.

The wedding I created colors are Eggplant, Burnt Orange and Ivory. We are using touches of damask, shabby chic chandeliers, branches and wine bottle centerpieces and lots and lots of candle light. This is going to be a really fun wedding! It's especially fun to see this inspiration board that was created so easy!

In these economical times we are all trying to cut back. This concept even applies towards your special day. Weddings that used to be lavish events are now turning to simplistic trends.

One thing still rings true: whether you are trying to conserve or splurge, there is a long list of to-dos before you can say, "I do." These lists can sometimes feel endless and take away from the excitement during your engagement. This is where a wedding planner eases the pressure.

Is a wedding planner right for you, your budget and your overall event?

Do not hire a wedding planner if you want to spend more money. You heard me right, you can save money with a wedding planner. In the past, planners have been perceived for only indulgent couples with money to spare. This is not the case these days.

Wedding planners are becoming affordable and can even get you discounts and special rates by consulting through them. Wedding professionals build up relationships with each other and will sometimes give benefits for referring them.

On multiple occasions I have seen free services thrown in by a vendor or a price even deducted in half because they went through a wedding planner.

Planners can also help you get more bang for your buck. They know how to cut back on certain expenses to make your event look like a splurge even though you might be on a tight budget.

Another reason you would not hire a wedding planner is if you can be in two places at once. Brides have a large roll. That is, of course, being the bride. On a wedding day it is not uncommon to have a 16-hour work day, a mop in one hand and an iron in the other.

The last thing a bride needs to do is to be steaming linen or polishing silverware before she is about to walk down the middle aisle.
Finally, don't hire a wedding planner if you already spend eight or more hours a day reading, writing, researching and dreaming about weddings.

Wedding planners are professionals that obsess over weddings, daydream about wedding and are always scheming new trends for weddings. They are full-time wedding guru's that have been doing this for years, not just for a few months of engagement.

By tapping into their skills and involving them from the beginning of your initial planning, you will be amazed at the creations that will come to surface giving you the wedding you did not even know was in your reach without breaking the bank.

After the family and friends have gotten to see the engagement ring and the excitement starts to settle, there is a lingering question that emerges from the bride, the groom and, especially, their parents: "How much is this going to cost me?"
Often it is automatically assumed the bride and the bride's family takes on the burden of emptying their pockets for the special day. If you are following tradition there are a few expenses that are expected of the groom and his family also.
Expenses that are the groom's responsibility are to pay for the bride's wedding ring and the honeymoon. Other costs the groom and his family are responsible for are the marriage license, the officiant's fee, the rehearsal dinner and the groomsmen attire.
An often overlooked expense for the groom is certain floral pieces. If the floral is held or worn, it is the responsibility of the groom. This includes the bride's bouquet and all the bridal parties and families boutonnieres and corsages. This is a way for the groom to honor his bride and the special people in their lives they want to recognize on their wedding day.

The traditional way of paying for things is not the only way it is done anymore. It is not uncommon these days to see a bride and groom paying for their entire wedding themselves or paying a large portion of the bill. Many couples are getting married at older ages and are more financially stable and able to contribute to their wedding.
A more modern way of figuring out who pays for what, is for the bride and groom to come up with a fairly accurate quote and have their families pick and choose what they would like to contribute.

Often the parents of the bride and groom will offer an amount they are willing to spend on the entire wedding. Anything additional the bride and groom may want at their wedding is a cost they will pay for themselves.
Another way to split up the bill is into an equal three way split. The bride and groom pay for a third, the bride's parents pay for a third and the groom's parents pay a third. This way the burden of paying for a wedding is spread out.
